Daniel Lamb (1791-1867)

Daniel LAMB was born 8 Aug 1791 in Wigan, Lancashire, England. He died 1 Dec 1867 and was buried in Blackwood Prs Ch, Blackwood, NJ.

Daniel married Catherine WALLACE at Deane St Mary, Lancashire 23 April,1809. She was born 1788/1789. She died 25 Oct 1871 in NJ.

IMMIGRATION: Daniel and Catherine emigrated from Wigan, Lancashire, England to the Port of New York about 1818.  

RESIDENCE: After a time in Somerset County, northern NJ, settled in Deptford Township, Gloucester County, NJ.

FOUNDER OF ALMONESSON NJ: Daniel operated a store, windmill, grist-mill and later a cotton factory in Gloucester County, NJ. The village housing his workers was originally named Lambtown.

 

LAMBTOWN: Lambtown became known as Almonesson Mills, after the mill's Almonesson Lake. Daniel bought the gristmill in 1789, converted it to a cotton mill about 1830. His mill was washed away by rains. The water wheel was found four miles downstream. Daniel sold the property in 1854, and various owners ran converted grist mills to 1893. Several grist mills were washed away. It was renamed Almonesson, N.J. by the post office in 1872.

Their children included:

James W Lamb, born 1810 in Enland, married Hannah S Cheeseman 1834 and Sarah G Brown 1840.     James and Sarah had five children.

John W. LAMB, born 21 Feb 1812 and died 6 Feb 1891.
