John CHEW was born 1616 in Somersetshire, England. He died 1672 in Flushing, Long Island, NY.
MIGRATION TO AMERICA: In 1623, when John was age 7, he and his mother and indentured servants emigrated from Chewton, Somersershire on the ship Seaflower to join his father, John Chew, in Jamestowne, VA.
FINDING BRIDE IN NEW ENGLAND:
In1644, John and his brother Nathaniel were dispatched to New England by their father to pursue three runaway servants. It is unknown whether their mission succeeded, but John met there and married Ann Gates, daughter of Stephen Gates and Ann HILL Gates, formerly of Norwich, England, about 1650 in Hingham, MA.
SECOND MIGRATION - VA TO NY:
Along with some English colonists from New England, John and Ann migrated to Long Island. From 1650 to 1666 they helped to establish the first English settlement in the Hempstead, LI vicinity. Their Long Island farm occupied about 100 acres at Flushing.
Among the children of John and Ann was:
Richard CHEW, born about 1655 and died 1726.
PHILADELPHIA CHEWS: John's brother Samuel (1634-1677), was ancestor of the Chews of Philadelphia.
