John CHEW was born 16 Jul 1587 in Whalley Parish, Lancashire, England. He died 1668.

IMMIGRATION: John Chew, a merchant, sailed from England to Jamestowne, VA in 1618. This was only 11 years after Jamestowne had been founded in April, 1607 by a contingent of about 100 men led by John Smith on behalf of the London-based Virginia Company. It became the first permanent English colony in the New World. John Chew may have been with John Smith as early as 1607.

BEFORE THE MAYFLOWER:
John's 1618 arrival in Jamestowne preceded by two years the much-celebrated landing of The Mayflower at Plymouth Rock, MA. Actually, the Mayflower was sailing to Jamestowne but got blown off course and went to Massachusetts instead.

GRANT: John received land from the Virginia Company in 1618. He operated a tobacco plantation on Hogg Island, across the James River from Jamestown. By 1642, he also owned 1,200 acres in York County.

MERCHANT: John built a warehouse and store in Jamestowne. He dealt in wine, corn and tobacco.

COUNTY: He was a member and secretary of the Virginia Colony's House of Burgesses. The 1629 minutes report his county, Hogg Island.

MARRIAGE: John married Sarah GALE OR BOND in England, returning alone to Virginia in 1622 on the ship Chariity, which was owened by his wife's family.

MIGRATION TO AMERICA: In 1623, Sarah, with son John, 7, and indentured servants emigrated from Chewton, Somersershire on the ship Seaflower to join John Chew in Jamestowne.

PURITANS: When the Virginia Governor oppressed Puritans in support of the Church of England, John moved his family to Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He used Virginia tobacco to purchase 500 acres near Annapolis. After Sarah died in Maryland, he returned to Virginia.

Their five sons included:

John CHEW, born 1616 and died 1672.
Col. Samuel Chew (1634-1677), ancestor of the Chews of Philadelphia.

Pocahontas Saved John Smith's life at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607

Although no historical evidence suggests that John Chew (1587-1668), an ancestor of Charles Stevenson Lamb (1866-1941), even met Pocahontas, her travel to London in 1616 and his expedition from there to the same small English colony in 1618 associates him in time and place to the famed Jamestowne story.
