Jesse Chew (1738-1812)

Jesse CHEW was born 25 Nov 1738 in Gloucester Cty, NJ. He died 31 Jan 1812 and was buried in the Chew Burial Ground, Mantua Blvd, Sewell, NJ.

RESIDENCE: Jesse inherited his father's extensive lands southward from Sewell (Barnsboro), to Cape May, NJ. Jesse was described at the time as Southern NJ's largest land owner.

JESSE CHEW NATIONAL LANDMARK: Jesse's noted five-bedroom stone farmhouse, built in 1772, is well preserved at 611 Mantua Blvd., Sewell, NJ (listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.)  In 1990's it was the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Izzo (phone 609-468-7513 forn visit).

OCCUPATION: Farmer. Raised a quaker, Jesse became a Methodist preacher circuit-rider.

ACREAGE: At one time he was the largest landowner in New Jersey, possessing several thousand acres extending from Sewell south into Cape May County.

TORY: Like most New Jersey farmers during the Revolutionary War, Jesse was a Tory sympathizer. Though remaining neutral, he once provided food and drink at his home for British soldiers. Two of his brothers served on the British side. After the war, they were convicted and stripped of their land

Jesse married Mary RICHARDS on 21 Oct 1760 in Philadelphia, PA. Mary was born 18 Dec 1738 in Philadelphia. She died 7 May 1816 and was buried in the Chew Burial Ground, Mantua Blvd, Sewell, NJ.
